About the Author

Dr Stephen Law is the editor of the Royal Institute of Philosophy’s journal THINK, which aims to introduce philosophy and its merits to a wide audience. Before his retirement, he was a senior philosophy lecturer at Heythrop College in London. Stephen has written numerous academic papers as well as books for both adults and children including Really Really Big Questions for Daring Thinkers and the hugely popular The Philosophy Files.

Nishant Choksi is a Brighton-based illustrator who has created artworks for The Guardian, The Independent, The Times, The Wall Street Journal, NewScientist, and Vodafone.

This thought-provoking book poses challenging questions, using a conversational tone and illustrations reminiscent of vintage cartoons. Law, a philosophy professor, navigates controversial issues encouraging exploration and debate. In a section that asks “Where do living things come from?” he describes a Greek creation story and then the one from the Bible, remarking, “These stories from different times, places, and religions are certainly strange and wonderful. But are any of them true?” For certain ethical dilemmas, he gives more definitive responses (“Is it true that we care only about our own happiness? No”). The biggest philosophical quandaries naturally lead to more questions—which will frustrate some and invigorate others. Ages 9–12. (Oct.)

Inquiries about science, philosophy, and morality are presented in an engaging style that avoids leading readers to any preconceived answers, instead encouraging them to either arrive at their own conclusions or imagine a variety of possibilities. Everything from "What is the meaning of life?" to "What is it like to be a bat?" is addressed. The dichotomy between those questions science attempts to answer ("What is stuff made of?") and those of morality ("What makes stealing wrong?") leads readers into a noteworthy exercise of reason. Many of Law's selections emerge from today's scientific headlines, an example of which is the question "Is it wrong to design a baby?," which certainly evokes much-heated debate.
